Canada Phone Number for Verification Code: How to Receive SMS on a +1 Canada Number Online

Searching for a "canada phone number for verification code" usually means one of two things: you need a +1 Canada number to finish signing up for an app, or you are not sure whether a +1 number is Canadian or American. This page covers both. It explains how Canadian numbers are built, lists the Canadian area codes published by the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNAC), and shows how to receive an SMS verification code on a Canada number with SMSPing.

Are Canada and the US both +1?

Yes. Canada and the United States are both part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), and both use country code +1. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) says the plan covers 20 countries, so besides the US and Canada, Bermuda and several Caribbean countries also use +1.

So +1 alone does not tell you the country. What tells you is the area code: the three digits right after +1. Canada's area codes are published by CNAC, and the full current list is on the area code page of the CNAC website (cnac.ca).

Canada phone number format

Canadian numbers use the same format as US numbers:

  • International format: +1 + 3-digit area code + 7-digit number, so 10 digits without the +1.
  • Example layout: +1 416 XXX XXXX (416 is a Toronto, Ontario area code).
  • Mobile and landline numbers share the same area codes, so the format does not show whether a number is a mobile.

When an app asks for your number, choose "Canada +1" as the country and enter the 10 digits. Some apps strip a leading 1 for you and some expect only the 10 digits, so follow the app's own prompt.

Canadian area codes by province

These are the geographic area codes CNAC lists as in service (checked November 2026):

Province / territoryArea codes
Alberta368, 403, 587, 780, 825
British Columbia236, 250, 257, 604, 672, 778
Manitoba204, 431, 584
New Brunswick428, 506
Newfoundland and Labrador709, 879
Nova Scotia / Prince Edward Island782, 902
Ontario226, 249, 289, 343, 365, 382, 416, 437, 519, 548, 613, 647, 683, 705, 742, 753, 807, 905, 942
Quebec263, 354, 367, 418, 438, 450, 468, 514, 579, 581, 819, 873
Saskatchewan306, 474, 639
Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut867

A few notes:

  • CNAC also lists some area codes that are assigned but not yet in service, such as 273 (Quebec), 851 (Nova Scotia) and 568 (Alberta). Check CNAC notices for their start dates.
  • Non-geographic 8XX codes such as 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are shared across North America, so they do not show whether a number is Canadian or American.
  • New area codes are added over time. If a number's area code is not in the table, check the latest list on cnac.ca.

How to tell if a +1 number is Canadian or American

  1. Remove the +1 and look at the next three digits.
  2. Look those three digits up in the table above. If they are there, it is a Canadian number. If not, it is most likely a US number or from another +1 country.
  3. If it is a non-geographic 8XX code such as 800 or 888, you cannot tell the country from it.

How to receive SMS on a Canada number: public inbox sites vs a private one-time number

Many search results for "receive sms canada number online" are public-inbox websites. A public inbox site lists shared phone numbers, and every message sent to one of those numbers is displayed on an open web page that anyone can read. The same number is usually used by many people at once, so a code may already have been seen or used by someone else.

SMSPing works differently. It provides a private one-time activation number:

  • You buy a number for one specific app and one activation.
  • The code sent to that number appears in your own order, not on a public page.
  • The price is shown on the order page before you buy: see the live price on the order page.

Which suits you depends on what you are doing. Keep in mind that anything sent to a public-inbox number can be read by strangers, so think twice before using one for an account you care about.

How to get a Canada phone number for a verification code on SMSPing

The steps are the same as for other countries:

  1. Open SMSPing and choose the app (service) you want to sign up for.
  2. Choose Canada as the country and look at which operators currently have offers and at what price. Prices and stock change: see the live price on the order page.
  3. After you buy, you get a one-time Canada number starting with +1.
  4. In the app, choose "Canada +1", enter the 10-digit number and request the SMS code.
  5. Go back to your SMSPing order, read the code and enter it in the app.

If the Canada verification code does not arrive

  • Check that you chose Canada +1 in the app, not the US or another +1 country, and that the number has exactly 10 digits.
  • Check that the app is sending an SMS. Some apps send the code to a signed-in device or inside the app first.
  • Do not tap "resend" over and over. Wait a little before trying again; repeated requests can trigger the app's own limits.
  • If nothing arrives, cancel according to the order rules. The cancellation and refund conditions for orders with no SMS are in Pricing, top-ups, cancellations and refunds.

Before you start

  • SMSPing numbers are one-time activation numbers for receiving one verification SMS, and you do not keep the number after the activation.
  • For that reason, do not set one as an account's recovery number or two-step verification number. When you need to verify again later, the same number may no longer be available.
  • Follow the terms of the app you are signing up for and the rules that apply where you are.

Frequently asked questions

Are Canadian and US area codes the same?

The country code is the same (+1), but the area codes, the three digits after +1, are different. Canada has its own set, such as 416, 604 and 514. See the table on this page and the CNAC website for the full list.

How many digits is a Canadian phone number?

10 digits without the country code: a 3-digit area code plus a 7-digit number. With the country code it is +1 followed by those 10 digits.

Will a Canada virtual number work for every app?

No. Some services block virtual numbers, and each app decides which numbers it accepts. The apps you can choose are those with a current Canada offer on SMSPing, but an offer being listed does not mean a particular app will accept the number.

Can I use a Canada virtual number for WhatsApp?

If WhatsApp has a current Canada offer on SMSPing, you can buy a one-time number for it and read the code in your order. Whether WhatsApp accepts the number is up to WhatsApp. Check the live price and availability on the site before buying.

Can a Canada number replace a US number?

This page does not make that call for any app. It depends on which country the app requires. Use a number from the country you select in the app.

How much does a Canada number cost on SMSPing?

It depends on the app and the operator, and it changes. Choose the app and Canada on SMSPing to open the order page and see the live price. Charges, cancellations and refunds are explained in Pricing, top-ups, cancellations and refunds.
